Weix The minutes from 4/2/19 were approved. Communication Guests from Irish Students and the College of Humanities and Sciences were welcomed to the committee. Professor Oriordain provided a brief explanation of why Irish Studies should remain in English. Ireland was a colony of Britain and its culture is in two traditions. There is a scholarly community with English Literature Faculty. Courses are also offered in other disciplines such as History and Theatre and Dance. It currently has 17 minors and functions quite well. The faculty members in English do not see any advantage to moving out of the department. They were not consulted about the move. Friends of Irish Studies are also not in favor of the move. Dean McNulty commented that we all want the program to be successful. Discussions have been taking place for several years. Enrollment has dropped and there is no funding for the director position. Moving the program to the World Languages and Culture could give it more exposure and create synergy. The program would still be interdisciplinary with courses taught by English faculty. According to Professor Arens, the Faculty in Modern and Classical Languages discussed the situation on Friday. They do not want a move if the Irish Studies faculty members are opposed. The move is not something they wish to fight over. Collaboration between Irish Studies and Global Languages is still a possibility even if the program does not move. It just has not yet happened. Enrollment in the Irish Language courses increased when they transitioned to 4 credits to be consistent with the MCLL courses at general education requirements. Fundraising is essential for the Director position. There is no immediate financial gain or loss from the move. The courses would still be taught intermittently. Business Items The Literature Department revised its curriculum three years ago to allow students to have more choice. At the time it did not request that LIT 236 Literary Histories or LIT 246 Genres, themes, and Approaches be set up as repeatable. Students must choose two courses from the 200-level core, but because the content is variable in 236 and 246 they can retake the course with different content to meet the requirement. However, since repeatability was not set up on the courses, the students are being charged a repeat fee and the second courses grade replaces the first course. Troy from the Registrars office also explained that if content is 80% similar than it should have the same number/title as the course at another MUS Campus. The variable content courses were reviewed initially at the systemlevel, but each variation is not. The department would have to evaluate transfer students course syllabi to determine whether they would satisfy the requirement. The flagship institutions have more diverse curriculum. CCN course numbering allows campuses to list courses with the common title then a colon with a unique title, but only the common title appears on the students transcript. OCHE currently has CCN Councils working on the MT Transfer Pathway pilot project and will have a report on May 3rd. OCHE is interested in two-year courses counting toward four-year degrees. This may help to resolve the situation. ASCRC approved repeatability to 6 credits for LIT 236 and 246 so students are not harmed in the process of resolving the situation. There are other courses with variable content offered in across campus. Departments should be able to adjust content while still meeting established learning outcomes. These courses provide opportunities for students. Executive Director French spoke to the draft motion to establish deadline for reinstatement. It was suggested by the Academic Advising Council. Students need to understand that there are several steps to reinstatement that take time. The Committee discussed the language. It prefers not to have a hard deadline so that students are not deterred. There have been circumstances when faculty advisors will work with students in the major to be reinstated in less than six days. Programs can establish earlier deadlines. Students need to check with their major department. Traditionally the Registrars Office has process whenever they come in. Executive Director French will edit the language for consideration at the next meeting. Professor Ruth Vanita (handout distributed) brought an issue to the attention of ASCRC. The South & South-East Asian Studies Program was included in the proposal to eliminate Global Humanities and Religions. However, ASCRC requested that the programs be separated. The following language was included on the consent agenda: Global Humanities and Religions Level I BA and Minor*Termination*ASCRC approved termination of BA and minor of GHR based on the provision that a revised proposal be created including insufficient faculty in the justification and separates the SSEA interdisciplinary minor. The SSEA minor can be house in the department where the Director resides similar to the minor in IDS. Since then the Director of SSEA, Professor Vanita has had difficulty processing payments for speakers brought to campus by SSEA. There seems to be confusion in the College of Humanities and Sciences about how the program should be supported, given GHR still exists to teach out the current students. Professor Vanita will then move to a partial appointment in English and MCLL. ASCRC requests that Dean McNulty respond in writing to how this will be addressed. Ask Dean McNulty to respond in writing, The draft annual report will be distributed prior to the next meeting. Ideally it should go to the last Senate meeting as information.
